Another great Saturday morning coffee and chat with Pierre. We do two dreams, and in between discuss the poor state of education in the country and what would need to be done to fix it.
Note: I myself, when I bring up Socratic Seminar, do not do a good job of conveying to the other folks around the circle, from the get-go, that 'Socratic Seminar' is not a loose word or phrase I invented, but an actual practice with specific training for teachers (moderators) and a rubrik for students to use to grade each other.. (Nor did anyone ask me whether this is a special methodology, or whether I am using it in a loose way.) It is not just an “everyone sits around and talks” ad-hoc thing. It is a serious method teachers need to be trained in, which they can use for running, cultivating, policing, and training human discussion on a text. For this reason, David thought he had already done it (when he is not trained in it), and Barbara brought up objections to it which are in fact handled by the method itself (which is why teachers/moderators have to be trained in it). People thought I was 'adding' things to it, when in fact I was not: they were things that are already part of it, for which -- again -- the moderators need training.
For resources on Socratic Seminar, and how to get trained on it, and for video examples online of Socratic Seminars in action and being filmed engaging in it, see the More Info section below.
All I have of this dream - or what I have - is a single image. It was a conversation (I think I was participating). In the dream there were people - I think in classical dress - standing around talking. High-minded folks. But also the image was there, which was like a deep green bar - vertical and piercing, connecting to things, one of which is, I think, me, or people in general, and the other is a higher realm. At least that's what I would say about it, now.
And the thing is that that image of that sunoke was actually part of the structuring I did for that class. So it was circles of realms connected by this bar. And in the dream, it was a deep vibrant green. But in the structuring, two things: It wasn't green, and there were no people. I wasn't in it.
[The end of a very long dream. This is (only) the part I remember.]
It seems like we are at a banquet or a gathering. It is like a ceremony. At first, I don't know, this guy just dives into a ritual. He is very somber, dramatic, and serious. As soon as he dives in, within a minute there is something foolish about it and comical. That comical thing in the dream is like the way he looks, or he starts to take it irreverently. There's just something that changes that makes it irreverent, and kind of 'funny from the outside'. It elicits a different response than the ritual is trying to get him into.
